ParticipantCurrently, when an injury is called the play is considered dead immediately as of the time of the call. This can accidentally (or intentionally) benefit the team sustaining the injury if they threw the disc away following the injury call. Since play is stopped at the time of the call, the throwaway is negated giving them possession again, even when the injury call was elsewhere on the field.
Let’s update the rule to treat injuries as a continuation (like a “pick”). Stop as soon as the injury call is acknowledged, take care of the injured player (obviously), and then assess whether or not the injury affected the outcome of the play. If it had no affect, the continuation should be accepted and play continues. If it did affect the play in a meaningful way, reset back to the time of the injury.
As a side note, the rules currently do have an exception for when the disc is mid-air during an injury call (see below). This could be removed based on my proposal, as an injury call may or may not affect a play regardless of whether the disc was in mid-air.
Current Injury Rule Reference
19.1.5. The injury stoppage is considered to have been called at the time of the injury, unless the injured player chooses to continue play before the stoppage is called.19.1.6. If the disc was in the air when the injury stoppage was called, play continues until either a player establishes possession, or the disc hits the ground. If the injury is not the result of a foul by an opponent, the completion or turnover stands, and play restarts there after the stoppage.

ParticipantIs this not already the case? The rule that allows continuation after a pick is 16.3, and the annotation states that it applies to injuries as well.

ParticipantThanks for the feedback! Upon further investigation it appears the rules already match my proposal both at the WFDF level, and at the USAU level. Though the individual sections regarding calling an injury mention “the time of the injury”, I think it’s still handled by the rules quoted below, stating that the players can agree that if it had no affect it should be treated as a continuation.
WFDF Rule 16.3: Regardless of when any call is made, if the players involved from both teams agree that the event or call did not affect the outcome, the play stands. This rule is not superseded by any other rule.
USAU Rule 17.C.1: Despite any outcome dictated by these rules, if the involved players on both teams agree that the infraction did not affect the outcome of the play, play stops and the result of the play stands. This provision does not apply if the thrower is aware an infraction has been called and subsequently attempts a pass.
Suggestion cheerfully withdrawn 🙂
