Defender started counting very loud, almost yelling at the offense. No foul or violation was called at that moment. Later on, a conversation was held and argued about this. He said it was a strategy to let his team know where the stall was going.

Might it be a violation of spirit of the game be considered?

1.6. The following actions are clear violations of the spirit of the game and must be avoided by all participants:
1.6.3. taunting or intimidating opposing players; (especially if it is a new player)

Discussion ended and no one doubt about validity of his strategy but offense could have seen this as an intimidation and called a foul.

If the thrower felt like it was intimidation, they could call a violation to discuss that.
Another option would be for the players/captains/spirit captains to discuss it on the sideline after the point.
