Can a player be stalled while unable to throw?

    If a player catches the disc in bounds but then runs out of bounds (off the sideline for example), can a stall count be initiated before they return to establish a pivot?

    Similarly, if a player catches the disc in bounds then ends up entirely in the endzone, can a stall be initiated before they return to establish a pivot?

    Since the disc is ‘live’ in both scenarios, it would seem that the answer is “yes” to both, unless the phrase “until a pivot is established;” in 8.1.2 is meant to refer to any time when a pivot is not established, effectively making the scenarios above “dead” disc situations.

    Is there any chance of a clarification?

    Thanks

    9.3. The marker may only start and continue a stall count when:

    9.3.1. The disc is live (unless specified otherwise);
    9.3.2. They are within three (3) metres of the thrower; and
    9.3.3. All defenders are legally positioned (Section 18.1).

    As long as the marker is withing 3 metres of the thrower they can initiate the stall count, even if the thrower is out-of-bounds or in the endzone.

    8.1.2. only applies if there is an interception, in which case the marker must wait until the thrower establishes a pivot before they initiate the stall count (unless there is a “delay of game” violation).
