16.2.4.1 – “Play on” wiggle room

One more quick clarification about invoking the “play on” call (ostensibly only referenced in 16.2.4.1):

When a foul or violation is called during the action of throwing or when the disc is in the air, after establishing possession:

16.2.4.1. If the team that called the foul or violation gains or retains possession as a result of the pass, play shall continue. Players recognizing this may call “Play on” to indicate that this rule has been invoked.

A couple situations that have caused doubt in the past:

    1. If “play on” is invoked in anticipation of what appears be an easy catch, and the reception is then muffed, does the turnover stand? Or must the “play on” necessarily be called after the reception has been made?
    2. Is the interpretation of the rule correct that anyone (“players”) can invoke “play on” – the player who called the foul, his teammates or even the other team?
    3. Can a “play on” be contested? (eg, the mark thinks the foul call was prior to the throw rather than in the act of throwing and that play should have been stopped before the pass was attempted)
    4. In many instances, if the foul was called by the defense and the offense loses possession, the call that’s actually used to indicate the invocation of play on is “turn” or “turnover”. No problem there, right?

Thanks again (and sorry if some of the points are pedantic, just want to get it clear for when the question comes up with newer players)!

The “play on” call has no affect, however it could still be a turnover if the foul had no impact on the catch (16.3: “Regardless of when a call is made, if the players involved from both teams agree that the foul, violation or call did not affect the outcome, the play stands.”)

    2. Is the interpretation of the rule correct that anyone (“players”) can invoke “play on” – the player who called the foul, his teammates or even the other team?

    Yes

    3. Can a “play on” be contested? (eg, the mark thinks the foul call was prior to the throw rather than in the act of throwing and that play should have been stopped before the pass was attempted)

    Yes

“Play on” is still an appropriate call, ie after a travel that is a turnover.
