Hello Will! I’m in charge of reviewing the rules to explain to my team leading into WBUCC. And I had the same specific question as Sofia (her #2) had above:
If I am standing still with one of my feet under the line and catch a disc thrown to me, am I IN per reasonable application of “under the tape is IN”? Or, could there be a discussion as to how close my visible shin was to the tape, and the width of the tape, and the length of my foot? I basically want to be able tell my team whether this is something we can expect others to call us on / to call others on.
Your answer to Sofia referred to your Facebook comment, but I’ve read it many times and I’m still not sure what the answer is. I agree it’s an uncommon case and YAY! for fewer calls, but I still don’t know what *should* happen. Some of your response from back then below:
“Now, we may encounter issues such as trying to determine if a players foot that is obscured under sand AND under tape is ALSO contacting sand that is past the tape, and therefore out of bounds. Cue the incoming fruitless arguments!
We did discuss this, and came back to the point that this will be a pretty uncommon case. Therefore it will incite fewer calls about the precise location of your point of contact and its relation to the tape, and reducing these calls was one our goals in fixing these rules.”
** I’m secretly hoping “under the tape is IN” applies automatically here, as that would simplify the explanation for these non-exceptional cases (exceptional cases being where, say, the whole leg is under the tape)
